Abstract
31.6% of melanomas were found in the head and neck area. In this series of 67 cases, 31.3% were melanomas of the oral and nasal mucosa, a considerably higher figure than that reported in the literature. Melanoma of the eyes occurred at an earlier age than that of other localizations. The prognosis of this tumor is directly related to its skin, mucosal or ocular localization, to the presence or absence of metastasis and to the type of treatment. Survival for five years in melanoma of the head and neck skin was 75% for cases without ganglionary metastasis, primarily treated by us. This figure dropped to 16% in the presence of ganglionary metastasis. In melanomas of the oral and nasal mucosa the results of treatment were uniformly bad. The prognosis was much better for melanomas of the eyes than for the oral and nasal localizations but did not equal the results obtained in skin lesions. (Journal received: 5 Aug. 1975)
