Abstract
The ability to absorb Zn in the presence of an Fe-containing prenatal supplement was examined during the third trimester of pregnancy in 8 women living in a peri-urban settlement area of Lima, Peru. These women were enrolled in a USAID funded prenatal supplementation study which provided prenatal supplements containing 60 mg of Fe (as ferrous sulfate) and 250 ug of folate with or without the addition of 15 mg of Zn (as Zn sulfate) from week 10-24 of pregnancy throughout gestation. To examine Zn absorption from these supplements, a dual tracer stable isotope study was undertaken. On the day of the study, fasted women consumed their prenatal supplement along with an oral dose of 67Zn (0.025 mg/kg) administered in a flavored sugar drink without ascorbic acid. Immediately following the PO dose, 70Zn (0.3 mg) was administered intravenously. Spot urine samples were collected at 55, 70, and 78 h post-dosing and stable isotopes were measured using magnetic sector TIMS. Fractional Zn Absorption and Subect Characteristics n Age (y) Week Gestation Wt (kg) BMI (kg/m2) Zn Abs (%) 8 24 ± 5 34.4 ± 1.0 60.97 ± 5.46 25.84 ± 2.75 22.30 ± 5.2 Because of the blinded nature of the study, we do not yet know it these 8 women were receiving the supplements containing Zn. In summary, these data demonstrate that intestinal absorption of Zn in the presence of 60 mg of Fe is comparable to other Zn absorption data reported for pregnant US women.
