Abstract
We have constructed a dedicated microprocessor system to control the operation of an ultraviolet monochromator for spectroscopic research in the atomic physics of highly ionized atoms. The microprocessor controls all functions related to the positioning of the monochromator wavelength as well as the collection and real-time display of the data. It also transmits the data to the central lab computer for detailed analysis and archival storage. The development goal was to provide a computer capable of easy upgrades while also maintaining a high degree of user friendliness. A Multibus board with a Motorola MC68000 was chosen for the Central Processing Unit because of the computing capacity of the microprocessor. The Multibus format was selected because of the large number of vendors that manufacture other compatible components. © 1986.
