Abstract
In this work the academic performance of freshmen students belonging to the engineering programs is investigated. We focus on a university in Lima city. Our research tries to understand if the high school performance in mathematics inside of the context of basic education explains the success in the first year of university studies. The resulting statistics reveal that the better students perform at mathematics in high school, the better will be their academic performance as freshmen in mathematic courses at the university.
