Abstract
Objective: To report the clinical and histopathological findings of three cases of histiocytic granuloma of the conjunctiva following injection of triamcinolone acetonide. Design: Three patients ranging in age from 66 to 78 years of age had received subconjunctival triamcinolone acetonide injection. One patient received the injection following extracapsular cataract extraction, another after removal of epiretinal membrane, and the third after vitrectomy for a macular hole. Results: Grossly, each lesion appeared as a tan-white sobconjunctival nodule. Microscopically, each specimen demonstrated a well-demarcated stromal lesion surrounded by thick collagenous bundles. In two cases, the lesions contained numerous vacuolated histiocytes and scattered multinucleated giant cells. The lesion in Case 3 showed extracellular frothy vacuolated material with minimal cellular response. Conclusions: Histiocytic granuloma of the conjunctiva is a rare complication following subconjunctival injection of triamcinolone acetonide. Ophthalmologists should be aware of the clinical findings of this condition. The pertinent literature and histopathological features are reviewed.
