We present a series of experiments suitable for introductory student laboratories that illustrate various aspects of viscoelastic behaviour. In particular, we seek to show behaviour that is different to the elastic case. The examples chosen are: the time dependence and nonlinearity of viscoelastic deformations, and the Boltzmann superposition principle. © 1999 IOP Publishing Ltd.
