Abstract
In the early 20th century, the architect Cèsar Martinell i Brunei designed several wine cellars, the most significant of which was the Cooperative Pinell de Brai. This wine cellar was designed in 1918 and was built between 1919 and 1927. Cèsar Martinell had inherited the geometric and structural theory of Antoni Gaudí i Cornet, whom he had met in 1915. A comparative study of the geometry of the arches included analysis of sketches and final project drawings (Historical Archive of the College of Architects of Catalonia), and compared them with the final executed work. Verified by means of massive data capture with a laser scan of the building, it can be concluded that the arches with a larger span tend to the geometry of the catenary, while the smallest tend to a parabola. To design the catenary and parabolic arches the theory of the static graph of the curve of equilibrium was used. This theory of equilibrium, studied by Robert Hooke, was used, through the filter of the master builder, among architects and engineers such as Antoni Gaudl.
