Abstract
Introduction: The National Medical Examination (ENAM) is a written test taken by medical students in the last year of their degree. Objective: To analyse the results and their variability by the students of the Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad de Cusco (UNSAAC), Peru, in the ENAM, in the years 2008-2015. Materials and methods: Descriptive and retrospective study was conducted on the results obtained by all the students of UNSAAC who took the ENAM in the years 2008-2015. An analysis was made of the results by areas and each year. The descriptive results were processed with central tendency and dispersion measurements, and finally the variability coefficient was calculated in each study area, considering acceptable if it is < 10%, moderate when it is between 10-25%, and excessive if it is > 25%. Results: A total of 337 participants took the ENAM in the study period, with 87.2% of them passing. The mean scores obtained were 12.49 for Internal Medicine, 12.06 for Surgery, 12.68 for Gynaecology-Obstetrics, 12.71 for Paediatrics, 10.83 for Public Health, and 11.96 for Basic Sciences. The variability coefficient was moderate for the areas of Gynaecology-Obstetrics and Public Health (15.2% and 12.5%, ??respectively), and was acceptable for the other areas (<10%). Conclusion: It is not possible to identify if the greatest variability in the areas of Obstetrics-Gynaecology and Public Health is the result of an academic education that is not taught uniformly over the years, or if this is the result of a growing impact by the medical training academies.
