Abstract
The National University of Engineering (UNI), in the process of assigning vacancies, handled the concept of admission options that allowed those who could not enter in the first time to have a priority, according to their final grade, and be able to compete with their peers to enter in a second, third, fourth and, in some cases, up to the eigth time to the university. The registration system accepted this type of logic supported by the Admission Regulation. This situation led to negative consequences for the UNI and as a result, students who entered the university in the second or later time presented situations such as immediate resignations, not enrolled, postponement of enrollment and untimely resignations. Due to this problem, we proceeded to describe the admission options in the admission processes contemplated in the regulations of the UNI and its implications for student desertion. It was concluded that the UNI modified its admission regulations so that applicants can access careers by vocation and not as a last option for not being out of the system, which resulted in the reduction of student desertion levels.
