Abstract
An accelerated pavement testing study was undertaken at the National Airport Pavement and Materials Research Center (NAPMRC) to assess the rutting resistance of warm mix asphalt under the influence of high tire pressure and temperature. Accordingly, a total of six test lanes were constructed with four different asphalt concrete mixes, namely: PG 64-22 hot mix asphalt (HMA), PG 76-22 HMA, PG 64-22 warm mix asphalt (WMA) and PG 76-22 WMA. Using the sixth generation airport heavy vehicle simulator (HVS-A), the test sections were subjected to a 272.7 kN (61,300 lbs) bidirectional wheel load with a specific wander pattern. This paper summarizes the NAPMRC TCI laboratory characterization effort supplementary to the validation of observed rutting performances. Polymer modified HMA and WMA exhibited comparable performance in both laboratory andfield traffic tests. Dynamic modulus at low frequency and high temperature was found to be an excellent indicator of rutting performance alongside simulative rutting tests like the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer and the Hamburg wheel tracking tests. High temperature indirect tensile strength appeared to correlate to the shearing behavior of asphalt concrete mixes as manifested by the critical pavement responses from embedded instrumentation. Besides verification of rutting performances, cracking potential of respective mixes was also evaluated at low and intermediate temperatures with disk-shaped compact tension and semicircular bend tests.
