Abstract
The 50 years of oil exploitation in the Peruvian Amazon have generated a series of environmental problems, only considering lots 192 and 8, there are more than 300 impacted sites in an area that exceeds 22,000 ha which are waiting for be remedied. The impact of impacted soils has not been remedied for decades, which has led to the concentration of the heaviest fractions of hydrocarbons in the soil (fraction F2 and F3) but can exceed the values established in the Standard of Peruvian Environmental Quality of agricultural soils. Vacuum pyrolysis is a thermochemical process that degrades organic matter in the absence of oxygen and that could be used to remedy soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. Five samples of Amazonian soil contaminated with crude oil from Lot 8-Peru were obtained, these samples were characterized by their content of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) fraction F1, F2 and F3, then they were subjected to vacuum pyrolysis at a temperature 550 ° C, pressure 40 kPa abs. for 180 minutes, the results obtained show an elimination of TPH greater than 99.99%, the treated soil complies with the Peruvian ECA of agricultural soil. In all cases the samples were pyrolyzed without any previous treatment. Likewise, the sample most contaminated with hydrocarbons (M2) was subjected to a macroscale vacuum pyrolysis, 8.28 kg of the M2 sample was taken, it was pyrolyzed for 408 minutes at 540 ° C and 40 kPa abs., The temperature of the water cooling was 17.5 °C, a 99.97% removal of hydrocarbons was achieved, and the treated soil complies with the Standard of Peruvian Environmental Quality of agricultural soils. Finally, the liquid product obtained in the pyrolysis was analyzed, which can be processed in a typical liquid effluent treatment system existing in oil production lots to reach the limits required by Peruvian regulation before being discharged to a water body. Vacuum pyrolysis is an effective and rapid method to remediate Amazonian soils highly contaminated with weathered hydrocarbons.
