Abstract
The Municipal Archaeological Museum of Caraz, in the Ancash highlands, houses two stone sculptures from the Formative Period of the central Andes. This article describes the iconography on one of these reliefs, offering a stylistic study of the sculpture and comparing it with stone and clay art found in different settlements of the north and north-central coast and highlands of Peru. The analysis situates the Caraz Museum’s relief in the Early Formative or Initial period. The concepts of embodiment, gender and materiality are also explored as part of the image making processes of the Formative Period sculptures.
