Abstract
The use of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) represents a threat to the environment and to the health of living beings, including humans. Therefore, the objective of this research was to aerobically biodegrade a mixture of PCBs using Pseudomona aeruginosa. For this purpose, a biodegradation assay was developed, as well as an analytical method by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to quantify Aroclor 1221, 1242 and 1254, which proved to be linear (R2>0.995), precise (CV<2.7 %), accurate with recovery percentages higher than 80 % with detection limits of 0. 006, 0.02 and 0.18 mg/L and quantification limits of 0.35, 0.67 and 0.65 mg/L for Aroclor 1221, 1242 and 1254, achieving biodegradation percentages of 97.62% and 97.40% for Aroclor 1221 and 1242 respectively, these values being higher than those reported in previous studies, and 25.40% for Aroclor 1254.
