Abstract
Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) is a company that operates two mines and two copper concentrators at the south of Peru, with a capacity of 147,000 metric tons per day. Both taillings concentrators are stored in Quebrada Honda by the operation and construction of a tailling dam of compacted cyclone sand. Quebrada Honda operates since 1997, and through its 6 years of operation they were improving some considerations of the initial design of its facilities, as they are: the dropbox, the cells of compactation, operation form, optimization of the maintenance equipment and other solutions. This paper presents the practice experience learned in the operation of the system, in areas of: - Redesign of the dropbox, and maintenance alternatives for the detrition. - Improvement in the design of the pickup structures. - Improvement in the operation of the compaction cells, and current reached reduction costs. - Improvement in the operation system. - Improvement in the maintenance costs of the equipment used in the operation. Also discuss the learned lessons of the practice experience, and the potential improvements that it are planned to be develop in the future.
