Abstract
For the past several years, chitosan has received a considerable attention for its excellent features including antibacterial, biodegradable, biocompatible, and polycationic properties. In the present chapter, it is revealed that chitosan is a versatile and useful polysaccharide used to tune the surface properties of various materials used in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. This is crucial because surface properties are known to impact cell behavior such as recolonization, adhesion, migration, and differentiation. In general, chitosan coatings provide special opportunities to modify surfaces of biomaterials through biochemical functionality and improving biocompatibility. Here, we present a review of numerous studies conducted in recent years and describe several techniques for coating metallic and ceramic materials with chitosan, to give readers an overview of this topic. The beginning of the chapter will focus on some of chitosan's tunable properties that must be taken into consideration at the time of the generation of surface coatings. Some of these properties are the degree of deacetylation and the molecular weight. Subsequently, methods to improve chitosan coating adhesion are explained. This chapter continues with a description of multiple coating methods for both metals and ceramics. Moreover, we share step-by-step instructions of how chitosan coatings are routinely produced in our laboratory by both electrospinning and layer-by-layer techniques. Many of the methods of coating metal and ceramic materials are still in the early stages of development and require further investigation. We hope this chapter will raise the reader's interest in investigating this promising polysaccharide and expand the knowledge in the area of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
