Abstract
Information and communication technology (ICT) has had an impact on adolescents across all sectors of society, and using ICT without guidance carries risks. This study evaluates the frequency of risks in ICT use among adolescents in the Junin region (Peru). The sample comprised 955 adolescents aged between 13 and 19 years (M = 15.21, SD = 1.07) from various provinces in the region. Participants were selected using stratified random sampling. Information was collected with an ad hoc instrument. The results show a significant difference (<.000) in knowledge of risks, which is greater in women. The main risks they are exposed to are access to inappropriate content (46.2%), sexting (24.9%), cyberbullying (20.9%), grooming (20.8%), sex casting (14.8%), and sextortion (12.3%). The differences were significant among males in most of the ICT risks discussed. It is concluded that adolescents in this region of Peru are exposed to these risks and, therefore, should receive guidance on responsible ICT use.
