Abstract
Oil shale is a fine-grained rock that is composed of immature organic matter where hydrocarbons are trapped in its micropores. The Lancones Basin is in the northwestern region of Peru, it presents adequate geological and geochemical characteristics such as the content of organic material present in the oil shale samples measured according to the total organic carbon (TOC) parameter is between 1 to 4.5%, which indicates that it is a probable source of unconventional oil. Pyrolysis is a thermal method used to recover the hydrocarbon contained in oil shale. Thermogravimetric analysis was carried out on a sample of oil shale extracted from the Lancones Basin to determine the kinetic triplet (Activation energy, pre-exponential factor, and reaction mechanism). Activation Energy was calculated using Friedman's differential isoconversional method, the pre-exponential factor was found according to the compensation effect and the kinetic model by the Master Plot method. Average activation energy of 113.1 kJ/mol and 164.0 kJ/mol was obtained in the conversion range of 0.05≤α≤0.40 and 0.45≤α≤0.95, respectively. The frequency factor in the same range of conversions has average values of 8.62E+07 min-1and 8.40E+07 min-1, finally it was determined that the kinetic model is the spherical contraction.
