Abstract
Canto general is an expression of intercultural rhetoric in Latin American and unfolds at four defined levels: 1) the one of language, 2) of literary structure, 3) of figurative and symbolic structures and 3) of world vision. The poet displays an ample register, from the formal to the colloquial, while framing his work within the parameters of epic genre. His metaphoric spectrum is wide and pays tribute to the various pre-Columbian cultures. Furthermore, in Canto general we find the displaced individual, the decentered one that moves from one place to the other in a dynamic manner, and one whose memory is fragmented besides. Thus, Neruda traces Latin American history back from its origins to present day.
