Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of diode laser for the treatment of human BPH. The study included 11 patients with significant BPH that were treated with diode laser 15 watts for 180 seconds (Diomed, Inc., Gallium-Alluminum-Arsenide, 810nm). Mean age was 69 years (range 59 to 84). Mean prostatic volume was 64.5cc (range 30 to 96). In all cases the procedure was uncomplicated, the blood loss was minimal (<100cc) and all patients were discharged within the first 24 hours. On average, patients voided spontaneously after 4 days (range 1 to 11) . There were no postoperative complications. At 6 months follow up the mean AUA-7 symptom score decreased from 24.27 to 8.12, the peak flow rate increased from 7.12 cc/sec, to 13.85 cc/sec, and the post void residual diminished from 58.5 cc to 38 cc. Our study suggests that diode laser therapy may offer a safe and effective alternative for the treatment of BPH.
