Abstract
Presents a review of the paleomagnetic data obtained from the Central Andes. A total of 214 sites have been sampled in Cretaceous and Cenozoic formations from southern Ecuador to southern Paris. The results show rotations in opposite senses on both sides of the Huancabamba deflection (3-5°S). North of the Huancabamba deflection, the clockwise rotations are interpreted in terms of in-situ block rotations. In the South, between the Huancabamba and the Arica deflections, the very consistent 15-20° counterclockwise rotations are interpreted as resulting from a post-Eocene rotation of the entire Peruvian margin around a pole situated in the Huancabamba area. These results are in good agreement with the geological observations and support a model recently proposed for the uplift of the Andean Cordillera. -from Authors
