Abstract
A fluorescence detection and quantification platform, termed «FluoPoC», is demonstrated. It runs on an Android™ smartphone that images and automatically analyses fluorescent assays confined within a disposable and customizable sample holder. The fluorescent samples are excited with light-emitting diodes, and the resulting fluorescence emission is filtered by a long-pass filter and captured by the smartphone camera. Then, the image is analyzed through digital image processing techniques, and results are displayed on the phone. Tests with Atto-488 dye showed a lower and upper detection limit of 0.1 μM and 2.5 μM, respectively. This portable and cost-effective sensing tool could be useful for rapid detection of molecular biomarkers of infectious and chronic diseases.
