Abstract
From june 1974, to december 1982, 201 patients with a proven diagnosis of non-disseminated carcinoma of the endometrium, were evaluated and treated in our Service. Surgery was performed in 139 patients (69%), and 62 (31%) were treated with irradiation alone. Overall survival after 2, and after 5 and 10 years were 81 and 70% respectively. Better prognosis was found in our series in the patients treated with a combined approach (surgery and portoperative irradiation), with well differentiated tumor, with an early stage of the disease, and with superficial myometrial penetration. Combination of surgery and postoperative external and intracavitary irradiation, seems to be, in our experience, the treatment of choice for the majority of cases. Today, contraindicators for surgery have become extraordinarely low, due to the advanced surgical and anesthetic techniques, and, being the prognosis better, we tend to reasonably force the indication of surgery.
