Abstract
Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis patients in resource-poor settings experience large delays in starting appropriate treatment and may not be monitored appropriately due to an overburdened health care system, communication delays, and missing or error-prone data. A web-based laboratory information system 'e-Chasqui' has been implemented in Peru to alleviate these problems by improving the timeliness and quality of laboratory data. It has been deployed in the national TB laboratory, two regional laboratories and twelve health centers. High user satisfaction and heavy use has led to e-Chasqui is being expanded to more institutions. A study is being performed to measure its impact and generalizability. © 2007 The authors.
