Abstract
From June of 1974 to December of 1975, 12 consecutive patients with lung metastasis secondary to osteogenic sarcoma were treated with actinomycin D. All patients had been previously treated with radical surgery except one patient who had received radiotherapy to the primary tumor. None of the 12 patients had received chemotherapy before entering into the trial. The median time to lung metastasis and treatment with actinomycin D after primary treatment was 3.5 months. Two patients received only one course of actinomycin D. One died shortly after the completion of the first course with progressive disease and the other patient refused further treatment. No response was recorded in the ten avaiable patients, and all of them demonstrated progressive disease during treatment. Nine months after lung metastasis had been discovered, and treatment with actinomycin D had been started, all patients were dead. The median survival of our patients after lung metastases were discovered or after initial treatment with actinomycin D was begun was 4.5 months, and the median survival time from the time of diagnosis was 9 months.
