Abstract
The Biofuels market in Peru is encouraged by Law 28054, which requires the use of biofuels in admixture with regular gasoline and diesel 2. Jatropha (Jatropha curcas) is one of such non-edible oils, It has become an interesting alternative for Biodiesel production, not only due to the great oil yield from of the seeds (30-40%). Jatropha oil contains about 4% free fatty acid (FFA), which is far beyond the limit of 2% FFA level that can be converted into biodiesel by transesterification using an alkaline catalyst. Esterification is performed with 100 mL of Jatropha curcas oil with 8% vol of methanol up to 45°C. 0.6% vol of concentrated sulfuric acid is added. The temperature is controlled for two hours. It is cooled in a decantation pear. The liquid formed in the lower part is separated. The biodiesel of Jatropha oil occurs at 60°C in 90 minutes with 0.36% NaOH and molar ratio of methanol/oil 10:1. The production of biodiesel from the inedible oil of Jatropha Curcas is an option to replace other raw materials to produce biodiesel from inedible oils.
