Abstract
Addictions in South America are a social and health public problem that have not been addressed in a direct and effective way, because of problems such as corruption, drug trafficking, and organized crime. In 2014, the White House published a list of 22 countries with the highest drug transit and production, including Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Cocaine production in South America has been decreasing progressively; however, this region is still the world’s largest producer of coca leaf, while marijuana is considered the drug with the highest production and consumption in the same region. Statistical reports state that at least 4.4 million men and 1.2 million women in Latin America and the Caribbean suffer the consequences and effects of drug use, which is why this subject will be discussed in this chapter.
