Abstract
Introduction: The incovenients of hospital wastes´ management go from the high volumes of generation to their deficient final disposal. Objective: To assess the rates of generation and final disposal of wastes in a first level of care hospital in Amazonas, in the period 2017-2018. Method: Non-experimental, descriptive and cross-sectional research that was conducted with the statistical information of the hospital. Data were assessed in three groups from the services function´s point of view. As generation indicators were used kg/bed/day and kg/patient/day. It was calculated the distribution percentage by type of waste and final disposal. Results: There were generated 20 222 kg of waste materials; the wastes generated in emergencies and medical-surgical services were the biggest amounts of the total production (56,52%). The total fraction of common waste was of 36,70%, biocontaminated wastes were 57,01% and special wastes were 6,28%. The generation rates were of 3,42 kg/bed/day and of 0,056 kg/patient/day. The 63,3 % of the wastes were deposited in the sanitary landfill by a company and the rest was disposed in the municipal waste dump. Conclusions: Although there are national and international standards of hospital solid wastes´ generation, the results of the research indicate that their implementation are not effective in the studied hospital, since the biocontaminated wastes´proportion is still high. However, those are deposited complying the sanitary rules and the conditions that these demand.
