Student dropout is a significant and global concern for higher education institutions. In academic organisations, there is presently a duality between retention and dropout. This situation harms not only the student who sees their dreams cut short but also the educational organisations and society more widely. Several studies have argued that technological, environmental, academic, economic, organisational and other factors contribute to student dropout. This study aims to identify the critical elements that condition student dropout. The methodology used is quantitative. A questionnaire was developed and applied on-line. The study population comprised 91 systems engineering students. Results show that according to the students’ perceptions, aspects influencing student dropout include tuition fees payment, effects of Covid-19, parents’ recommendation to pursue a professional career, economic commitment, unplanned pregnancy and loss of financial support from a family member. Another factor that had not been considered in years prior to the Covid-19 pandemic is technology, especially related to infrastructure and digital competencies.
