Abstract
Objective: To establish the possible relationship between internet addiction and the social skills of students in the fifth grade of secondary education in the Las Piedras district, Perú. Materials and methods: The research had a quantitative ap-proach, the design was non-experimental and the descriptive type-correlational, transectional. The sample consisted of 102 fifth-grade secondary school students to whom two data collection instruments were applied: the Lima Internet Addiction Scale and the Social Skills Check List, instruments with adequate levels of reliability and validity. Subsequently, the responses were systematized and analyzed using the SPSS® version 23 program. Results: 58.8% of students presented a medium level of internet addiction, 62.8% partially developed their social skills and it was statistically found that there is an inverse and sig-nificant relationship between internet addiction and the social skills of students (rs=-0.787; p= 0.000<0.05). Conclusions: High levels of internet addiction are related to low levels of development of social skills. For this reason, the educational institution must encourage a pertinent and prudent use of the internet so that students develop social in-teraction activities in their leisure moments and improve their family or friendships.
