Abstract
Objective: To identify the effectiveness of an intervention during the climacteric developed by midwives in relation to the symptoms in rural Quechua-speaking women of a community in Peru. Subjects/material and method: Quasi-experimental research, with a sample of Quechua-speaking women in the climacteric stage attended by midwives (experimental group) and Quechua-speaking women in the climacteric stage attended by general doctors (control group) in the rural Peruvian community of Macashca (3,384 masl). An intervention was applied only to the experimental group during the period June-October 2019, having evaluated the intensity of the climacteric symptoms using a previously validated questionnaire. The SPSS statistical package, version 22.0, and the χ2 test were used. Results: The sample consisted of 89 women in the experimental group, and 89 women in the control group. After the application of the intervention, the percentage of asymptomatic women during the climacteric was higher in the experimental group compared to the control group with respect to vasomotor symptoms (60 [67.4%] vs. 17 [19.1%]), psychological symptoms (69 [77.5%] vs. 9 [10.1%]), genitourinary symptoms (63 [70.8%] vs. 3 [3.4%]) and somatic symptoms (66 [74.2%] vs. 9 [10.1%]), finding statistically significant differences between both groups (p <0.05). Conclusions: A decrease and/or absence in the intensity of climacteric symptoms was observed in rural Quechua-speaking women who participated in the intervention developed by midwives in the Peruvian community of Macashca.
