Abstract
During the period January-April 1988, 124 asymptomatic homosexual Peruvian men were interviewed about their sexual behaviour as well as their attitudes and knowledge about AIDS and the way it is spread. The prevalence of infection was estimated by screening blood samples for the presence of antibody for HIV-1. The average number of sexual partners per subject in the last year was 7.6. Of the group interviewed, 97.6% practiced anal coitus and 24.8% used condoms. None of them reported using intravenous drugs. HIV antibody was detected in eight subjects (6.5%). It is concluded that the frequency of infection in the group studied was moderately high and that the risk factors for infection are the same as those described in other studies. -from English summary
