Abstract
In this research, the biomass of a cyanobacterium, nostoc commune (BNC), has been used as a biosorbent for the elimination of Pb (II) from polluted waters. The biosorbent was characterized by spectral and elemental analysis (FTIR and SEM/EDX). The influence of variables such as pH, contact time and BNC dose on the biosorption capacity (qe) was studied. The optimal conditions for the removal of Pb (II) were 2g/L of BNC, stirring time of 60 minutes and pH of the solution equal to 5.0. The kinetic data were analyzed using two models: pseudo first and second order kinetics. Equilibrium data using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Langmuir's equation provided the best correlation, which would indicate a monolayer biosorption, with a maximum removal capacity of 149.25 mg Pb/g BNC. The variable with the most significant influence on the Pb (II) removal capacity was pH. Research carried out demonstrated that BNC is a biosorbent with good potential to remove lead from aqueous media.
