Abstract
In recent decades, we have witnessed various economic, political, social and environmental conditions worldwide that directly or indirectly affect the business environment and thus individual companies. Further into the 21st century, the globalisation of markets and the interdependence of the world's economies, which are increasingly susceptible to crisis, also generate a greater degree of uncertainty. Additionally, issues such as sustainable development, climate change, sustainability and corporate responsibility, among others, now demand attention, which increases the range of the responsibility of businesses to their stakeholders. The need to promote sustainable economic development is a challenge for private companies, and government institutions in recent decades have sought solutions to these issues through the construction of protocols, conventions and agreements in various summits. At the same time, the creation of new guidelines, standards, certification systems, codes of conduct and ethical principles have led companies into a broad debate about the management tools that are used to ensure sustainable development planning. In this context, our focus is on thinking about the future of corporate sustainability through all of these instruments and management policies applied by companies to pursue sustainable development. © 2010 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
