Abstract
Background: Argyrochosma nivea (Poir.) Windham of the family Pteridaceae E.D.M. Kirchn, grows wild in the tropical Andes, humid and mountainous landscapes. Traditionally, it is used to treat various health problems; however, the lack of systematic information with scientific rigor that corroborates its pharmacological effects, causes potential problems that would affect the population who uses the plant, either due to a phytotherapeutic failure or the appearance of adverse effects. Therefore, this review aims to gather and analyze available information about Argyrochosma nivea on ethnobotanical, ethnopharmacological and phytochemical aspects. Methods: Data collection of Argyrochosma nivea was carried out using Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed and Biblioteca Virtual-CONCYTEC databases; In addition, Google-Academic search engine was used. The search terms were "Argyrochosma nivea", "Notholaena nivea" or "cuti cuti". Results: The use of the plant in traditional medicine is varied; for example, to treat diabetes, infectious conditions, inflammatory diseases, pain relievers and even for a toxic effect (abortifacient). Preliminary studies to evaluate the hypoglycemic, antibacterial and antioxidant effects are evident; in addition, 10 compounds were isolated from the plant. Conclusions: Available information of the plant was gathered and analyzed, structuring them in ethnobotanical, ethnopharmacological and phytochemical aspects. In addition, scientific gaps, that affect the proper use of the plant, were identified.
