Abstract
From January 1993 to May 1999, 27 patients underwent laparoscopic fundoplication for gastroesophageal disease (GERD) at Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen in Lima-Peru. The patient profile included 11 men and 16 women. The duration of symptoms was 5.5 years. The main preoperative symptoms were regurgitation (86%) and heartburn (78%). The mean operative time was 241 minutes. The average time for patients to tolerate diet was 2.3 days and the mean hospital stay was 6.1 days. One patient had conversion to open surgery, 1 had reoperation, 7 had intraoperative complications, 6 had early morbidity and four had late morbidity. Persistent dysphagia was present in 7.4%. The patient satisfaction was present in 92% with relief of symptoms and medication use reduction. Laparoscopic antireflux surgery is a safe and effective, therapeutic alternative in the management of GERD.
