Abstract
The antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli strains in piglets from a commercial farm in Lurin (Lima -Peru) was studied. Rectal swabs were taken from eighty piglets and cultivated in McConckey agar. Based on morphological characteristics, 5 colonies were isolated from each sample for biochemical confirmation. A total of 400 strains were analyzed and 340 (86%) E. coli strains were found. Nalidixic acid, fosfomicin, furazolidone, trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, enrofloxacin, streptomycin, gentamicin and ciprofloxacin were used to test antibiotic residence in these strains. The results record significantresistance to streptomycin and nalidixic acid (85.88% and 72.94%), followed by gentamicin (63.82%), and greater susceptíbility to fosfomicin, enrofloxacin, furazolidone, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin (54.12%; 49.41%;43.53%; 42.65% and 42.06% respectively). A high percentage of strains (76.2%) were resistant to three or more antibiotics.
