Abstract
Historical buildings represent a particular challenge for the current engineering practice. While evaluation procedures and strengthening of modern buildings use techniques and strategies tested analytically and experimentally (although this is not so in all cases), a wide range of existing procedures for historical buildings is in empirical condition or still under investigation. At the present time, a proposal for structural intervention must take into account the possibility of subsequent monitoring of the structural performance, and compatibility between existing and new materials. Reversibility of the intervention, that means, a future change of the intervention for any other, better than those proposed, must be considered. The Japan-Peru Center for Earthquake Engineering Research and Disaster Mitigation (CISMID, acronym in Spanish) is an institution of the National University of Engineering, which has developed studies to evaluate the earthquake-resistant performance of some historical buildings, such as the Cathedral of Cusco, the building of the Constitutional Court (historically known as Pilatos House), the Cathedral of Lima, the Legislative Palace and the Luis Alberto Sánchez Building. Each of these had its own singularities, related to the diversity of materials used in the construction - stone blocks, adobe, unconfined masonry, unreinforced concrete, quincha, steel frames - and the conditions of continuity between main parts of the buildings. Relevant characteristics of these evaluations are presented, regarding the different stages of the structural evaluation with the specific details of the historical buildings. In these cases, available analytical tools were carefully used because of the differences among the assumptions adopted in common analysis software and continuity conditions of present buildings.
