Reading of books and magazines, as a leisure activity of adolescents, is a topic with little research. People still think that leisure time isn't as important as time spent in productive and profit activities. Although, research on adolescent leisure time is necessary because adolescents express their real interests in these moments. The research goals of this study were: 1) Identify the preferred activities and the time spent in them by adolescents. 2) Considering those leisure activities, to know the likes and dislikes of adolescents in terms of importance and time spent in those activities, and 3) Identify activities associated with leisure reading. A self-report instrument in a sample of 325 secondary students of a religious private school was used. The questionnaire was designed by the author of the research. According to the results of the paper: 1) Adolescents preferred to spend their leisure time being with friends, in sports or playing, by contrast they preferred not to read any kind of books and magazines during their leisure time. 2) Seven activities associated with reading of books and magazines were identified using Spearman's correlation coefficient. It was found statistical significance (p < .05) among the leisure reading and these seven activities which are related with the use of electronic devices (computers, radios, walkmans, and discmans). Finally, a summary of the findings is presented as well as some suggestions for future research on adolescents leisure time.
