A study was done on 60 patients suffering from meteorism. For the purpose of control, 60 apparently healthy subjects and 60 patients suffering from diverse non digestive diseases were also studied, all of them age sex and social class matched with the patients suffering from meteorism. A part of Derogatis et al's. Symptom Checklist -90 (SCL 90) was administered to all 180 individuals; the part of SCL 90 used comprised the following psychopatholog psychopathologic Anxiety (A) Somatization or somatic symptomatology of anxiety (S), Depression (D), Obsessive Obsessive Compulsive (O-C), Anger Hostility (C-H) and Additional Scales (EA). Scores obtained with SCL 90 in the patients suffering from meteorism were significantly higher than the ones obtained in the apparently healthy subjects and the patients suffering from non digestive diseases, for all the psychopathologic dimensions studied, although somewhat less for C-H. Scores obtained in the patients suffering from non digestive diseases were significantly higher than the ones obtained in the apparently healthy subjects, specially for A and S, somewhat less for D and EA, and definitely less for O-C; on the contrary, scores were not significantly higher for C-H. Psychopathologic problems, specially a depressive syndrome, are frequently found in patients suffering from meteorism; anxiety, obsessive compulsive and anger hostility manifestations usually associated with depressive syndrome. When meteorism appears in a depressed patient, it could in time, as with any other disease or somatic disorder, produce reactive depressive symptomatology.
