Abstract
Introduction: In recent years, rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in prepubertal growth stages has been deeply investigated; however, its study has recently been increasing in adults without need for surgery. Material and Methods: At this stage, maxillary deficiencies can be treated with skeletally supported expanders with various device designs proposed by authors, with their own work protocols. Results: RME in adults can result in substantial expansion similar to that obtained in patients who have not yet completed the ossification of the mid-palatal suture, so it could be considered a favorable treatment alternative to correct crossbites and transverse deficiency of the maxilla. Conclusion: The objective of this review is to present the results reported in the scientific literature about RME in adults between 18 to 60 years of age. © 2022, Universidad de Concepcion.
