Abstract
Introduction: Scientific publication is considered the last step of research, being necessary to involve more and more the medical student in this process. The aim of this study was to determine the accessibility of student publication in Latin American medical journals. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted. All medical journals indexed in Scimago Journal & Country Rankâ„¢ were included. The instructions for the authors were reviewed, an email was sent to the journal's correspondence contact, and articles were searched in the database of each journal. The categories were: accepts student publication, accepts student publication with condition, does not accept, does not specify. The data were analyzed in the statistical program Stata/MPâ„¢ version 17, StataCorp LLC, Texas, USA, for descriptive analysis, percentages and frequency measures were obtained. Results: 188 journals were included, of which 52.65% allow the publication of scientific articles with medical students as authors with or without conditions. The countries of Brazil, Mexico and Colombia are the ones that most accept the publication of students freely. Likewise, Q1 journals and journals of thematic areas such as Complementary medicine, Anesthesiology and Occupational medicine mostly accepted student authorship. Conclusion: More than half of the journals analyzed allow student publication, and this probability increases with the better positioning of the journal, being an encouraging indicator of the inclusion of the medical student as an author.
